Patty Pan: XL Block = Throw Quilt

Well, I went on vacation, and brought this quilt with me.  And if it was nice weather, I promptly forgot about taking pictures.  Luckily, Maine island light is pretty bright, even through the fog.

For this Patty Pan throw-size quilt, I decided to go for a scrappy, patchworky look, using mostly Anna Maria Horner fabric scraps from previous projects.

The bright, saturated colors of the scraps provide contrast with solid white to help the fun zig-zag frame shine. With such large block units, this is by far the easiest and quickest way to a quilt with this pattern.

Since the block unit is a square, I added a line of patchwork squares to the bottom and top of the quilt, bringing it to about 60x70 inches for a generous lap/throw quilt.

For the center panel, as well as the back, I used Anna Maria Horner's "Sinister Swarm," which has appeared here before.  I love how they're moths, NOT butterflies, and how the background of the fabric has a subtle pink and white moth wing print.

The binding on this one is a mix of bright aqua solid and my favorite Loulouthi stripe, which ended up on some corners by luck.

For the quilting, I chose to quilt along each horizontal and vertical seam line, with every other line doubled to create a nice plaid effect. I used light gray thread, which was more visible on the white before the first wash (above).

It was refreshing to get away from the internet (and cell service!) and my sewing projects, and I'm re-energized to get back to my summer sewing plans!

If you're interested in making one of your own of these, the pattern is available via Craftsy or Etsy!
